2003-2004 Banquet Awards

JAGS Honors Players at 4th Annual Awards Banquet

Cypress, Calif., - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars held its annual Player’s Award Banquet at the beautiful Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, California. JAGS honored players for their academic achievements and tournament accomplishments during the 2003/04 season. Player of the Year honors were giving to Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, CA and Lizette Salas, Azusa, CA. Cory Bacon, Cypress, CA was awarded the "Spirit of Golf" award. Alumni Julie Kim talked about her collegiate golf experience at Kansas State and the incoming SCGA President and golf coach at Saddleback College, Bill Cunerty spoke about his experiences with collegiate golfers. Thank you Julie and Coach Bill for taking the time to share your wisdom with the JAGS' players and their families.

Lizette Salas, a sophomore at Azusa High School, captured two girls’ championship titles, four top 5 finishes, to earn her the Girls 2004 Player of the Year honors. Lizette’s first victory was also at the Shandin Hills Junior Challenge in September where she posted 76-73-149 to claim the championship. Her second title was captured in July, 2004 at the 4th Annual Jack B. Hooper Memorial when she carded a 75-73-148 even par taking first place over an impressive girl’s field of over 20 players. In addition to being named Player of the Year, Lizette was named Captain of the 2004/05 Western All-Star Team, was awarded Bronze Academic Honors for maintaining her grade point average between a 3.0-3.49 during the 2003/04 school year.

Kyle Warren, won two boys titles, and placed in the top 5, five times during the 2003/04 JAGS season. His victories came early in the season with back to back wins at the Shandin Hills Junior Challenge in September 2003 (72-78-150) and again at the Long Beach Junior Classic in October, 2003 scoring 2-under par 73-69-142 to clinch his victory, four shots ahead of the field. Warren, a four year Scholar Athlete with a grade point average of 3.87 on the JAGS Tour, also earned Player of the Year honors in 2002. In addition to being named Player of the Year, Kyle was named Captain of the 2004/05 Western All-Star Team, awarded one of the two $1000.00 JAGS Academic Scholarships presented during the evening and received Silver Academic Honors for maintaining his grade point average between 3.5-3.99 during the 2003/04 school year. Kyle will be attending and playing golf at Elon University in North Carolina this Fall.

Cory Bacon, incoming freshman at Oxford High School in Cypress, California was awarded the "Spirit of Golf " award. This award is presented to the junior golfer who demonstrates the best sportsmanship and etiquette during the year while playing on the JAGS Tour.

Cleveland Golf in Cypress, Calif., was honored as "Sponsor of the Year" for their dedication and support of JAGS and junior golf. Mrs. Eve Clayton was presented "Volunteer of the Year" award for her endless hours of tournament assistance and rules official during the 2003/04 JAGS Tour season. Mr. Robin Kapp was awarded "Outstanding Volunteer" award for his support during the last four seasons. Academic Scholarships were presented to Bill Clayton, San Bernardino, CA, and Kyle Warren.
