Pasadena, Calif.,
Garrett Sapp, Cerritos, Calif., the JAGS’ 2001 Player of the Year
returned to winning form in the final JAGS event in 2002 to win the
Boys Division Championship with a two day total of145, one over par.
In the Girls Division, Kristin Ingram of Pasadena, Calif., won her
first JAGS event by 3 strokes.
The 36-hole event
hosted by Junior Amateur Golf Scholars at the historic Brookside Golf
Club adjacent to Pasadena’s famous Rose Bowl just a day prior to the
Rose Bowl game. Players from San Juan Capistrano to Lancaster,
California teed it up during winter school break and enjoyed the
festive atmosphere surrounding the Rose Bowl preparations.
Sapp led the field
after round one with a sparkling 1 under par and held a two shot lead
over Joseph R. Roca, Sunland, Calif., and led third place Mitchell
Fedorka, Upland, Calif., by 6. Sapp said, “Hitting fairways and greens
today allowed me to score below par.” “I know everyone will be chasing
me tomorrow, so it will be important for me to stay focused and not
rush during the final round.” Added Sapp.
With a 9:00 A.M.
shotgun on day two, the players were treated to carts to ensure an
early finish to allow the Rose Bowl personnel time to get ready for the
big game on New Years Day. Sapp began on hole 1 paired with Roca and
Fedorka. Par started off his round but then he bogeyed the next three
to go 3-over on the first four holes to start day two. Sapp settled
down and scored 39 on the front, 3 over but recovered with a 35 (1
under) on the back for a second day total of two-over-par, 74 and the
championship. Sapp said, “It is an honor to win from start to finish
in the JAGS Rose Bowl Junior Classic and I look forward to defending my
title next year.” Second place finisher, Roca pulled within one shot
of Sapp at the turn but was 3-over on the back scoring a 77 for a 150
tournament two-day total. Fedorka made a two-shot improvement on day
two scoring a 75 for a 77-75-152 for the tournament but was caught and
tied for third place by Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, Calif., with a
78-74-152. Kris Assawapimonporn, Huntington Beach, Calif.,
took 5th with a 78-75-153 final score and Steven Chung, Los
Angeles, Calif., placed 6th with an 80-74-154.
Kristin Ingram, playing
in her home town of Pasadena, Calif., found course conditions to her
liking on day one as she took a commanding 5 shot lead over Meaghan
Montoya, Riverside, Calif., and 6 shots over Amanda Pentecost,
Lakewood, Calif. Ingram said, “I am really excited to be leading
today but I know I will have to try harder tomorrow to win.” The
pressure on day two caused Kristin’s score to slip over day one but she
held on to win by 3 with a two day total of 86-94-180 over a steady
Pentecost who was second at 183 and by 4 over Montoya who took third
place. Ingram said, “Even though I was nervous today and did not play
my best, it was good enough for my first JAGS title and I am very proud
of that.” “This was a fun tournament and I can’t wait to play in
more.” Added Ingram. Kristin Torok of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.,
placed fourth with a 192 and Katie Albright of Newport Beach, Calif.
was fifth at 195.
Alex
Bon of Santa Monica, Calif., enjoyed his first JAGS victory and took
home the first place trophy in the Boys 13-14 year old division scoring
an 87-76-163 two-day total to win by one stroke over Andy Kim, Laguna
Niguel, Calif., and Christopher John G Ancheta, Lancaster, Calif. Bon
said, “It was an exciting round today especially when I made birdie on
hole 5 and then eagled the 492-yard par-5 sixth hole for a smooth 3.”
“Also making birdies on 11 and 16 really kept me pumped during the
round.” Added Bon.
