San Bernardino, Calif.,
Brandon Olsson, Palmdale, Calif., claims his first JAGS Championship
coming from 6 strokes back at the start of round two, fired a one-under
71 to finish in a tie for first which he won with a birdie on the
second play-off hole to win the Boys Division Championship posting
78-71-149. Catherine Pease, Camarillo, Calif., came from 7 back
carding a 79 to capture first place in the Girls Division for her first
victory on the JAGS Tour.
The 36-hole event
hosted by Junior Amateur Golf Scholars at the hilly Shandin Hills golf
course, the fifth tournament of the 2002/2003 JAGS Tour season with
seven additional tournaments scheduled through the end of August.
Players from Northern California, Ventura/LA/Orange/Riverside/San
Bernardino and San Diego counties teed it up during the Martin Luther
King, Jr. holiday weekend to enjoy the hot “winter” sun, a challenging
course while having fun and making new friends.
In the 15-18 year old
Boy’s Division, Olsson began round two 6 strokes back of first round
leader Ryan Bailey, Moorpark, Calif., and 4 back of Kyle Warren, Los
Alamitos, Calif. Grouped in the final pairing of the day, Olsson made
up three critical strokes on the front and four on the back for a one
under 71 to lead Bailey by one, and putting him in a tie with Warren at
149. Warren and Olsson battled all day with each making unbelievable
birdies during their rounds. The back nine saw Warren birdie holes 12,
13, and 14 and Olsson answering with birdies at 13, 14 and 15. Both
players were eager to get back on the course for a sudden-death
play-off on hole one, a par-5 490 yd. hole. The first play-off hole was
halved with birdies so it was on to hole #2, a par-4 385-yd. hole as
Olsson drilled a ten foot birdie putt to claim the Boys Championship.
Olsson had a total of 6 birdies in his round plus 2 more in the
play-off for a total of 8 on the day, great playing for a comeback
victory. Warren took second after the play-off. Olsson said, “This
was a great tournament and going head to head with Warren was really
fun, especially with our string of birdies on the back nine.” “I am
looking forward to playing again with the JAGS Tour in February at Los
Serranos.” Added Olsson. Eric Jarvey, Palmdale, Calif., tied for 3rd
scoring (80-70-150) with the first-round leader, Bailey who posted a
two-day total of (72-80-150). Jarvey was awarded the third-place
trophy as cards were matched between him and Bailey. In addition,
Jarvey shot the tournament low round on day-two with a 2-under par 70.
4th place went to Mitchell Fedorka, Upland, Calif., and
James Ananian, Murietta, Calif., placed 5th. Dustin Slikker,
Bakersfield, Calif., took sixth with Mike Miller, La Canada, Calif.,
and Scott Clayton, San Bernardino, Calif., both tied for 7th.
Catherine Pease,
Camarillo, Calif., was 7 strokes off the lead when she began her round
playing in the group ahead of first round leader, Katie Albright,
Newport Beach, Calif. Pease was 4 over after five-holes when she was
stung by a bee walking off the fifth green. Determined to continue
playing, she tripled the 320-yd., par-4, sixth hole to go 7 over on her
round, but played the next 12 holes at even par. Pease shared her
secret with her fellow competitors but not one agreed to get stung to
see if it would help their scores. Pease said, “I really would not
recommend getting stung, even though it seemed to help my game.” “This
is my first JAGS tournament and it was the best and I am excited to
finish out my 2003 senior year playing the JAGS Tour.” Added Pease.
Megan Montoya, Riverside, Calif., and Michele Ann Johnson, Los Angeles,
Calif., tied for 2nd with the trophy going to Megan on a
card-off. Sun Kyung Kim, “Kitten” Buena Park, Calif., was 4th
and first round leader Albright finished 5th.
John Park, Palmdale,
Calif., another first time JAGS’ player who turns 15 in February
finished 1st in the 13 & 14 year old flight posting
(78-77-155) making the most of his final opportunity playing in the
younger flight. Gene Webster, Jr., San Bernardino, Calif., took 2nd
and Jackson Trugman, Los Angeles, Calif., placed 3rd.
