Whittier,
Calif., - Gregg Gauvin, Valencia, Calif., posted 72-75-147 to take the
Boys Championship title by three strokes at the JAGS 3rd Annual Jack B.
Hooper Memorial Junior Tournament in Whittier, Calif., held at the
beautiful California Country Club – July 24-25, 3003. In the Girls
13-18 year-old Division, Lizette Salas, Azusa, Calif., took the lead on
day one and never looked back to claim her second 2003 JAGS Title.
The
36-hole event hosted by Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, showcased players
from Southern California on the long California Country Club’s course
in Whittier, California.
Gauvin quickly took the
lead on day one posting (37-35-72) even par over the field.
Competitors Brendon Wong, Orange, Calif, (39-37-76), Scott Clayton, San
Bernardino, Calif., 37-41-78 and Phillip Huffman, Villa Park, Calif.,
(38-40-78) were a few strokes behind and still in the hunt at the
completion of day one. Gauvin said, “This is a long course from the
Blue Markers and with the morning dew on the grass, the course does not
give you much roll on the fairways.” Gauvin missed the longest drive
contest on the par-4 448 fourth hole as his ball trickled two inches
into the first cut off the fairway. “Tomorrow is another day and I
will continue to work very hard not to get ahead of my game plan and
keeping my focus on positioning the ball during my round to score low
to win the tournament.” Added Gauvin.
As the first round
leaders teed it up on the second day, they knew anything was possible
and with good solid play, each of them had a chance to bring home the
championship. Clayton and Gauvin both took charge immediately as they
each scored birdie-4 on 506-yard first hole to start off their rounds.
Wong immediately answered with his own birdie on the 344-yard par-4,
third hole putting him and Clayton 1-under for the first three holes
with Gauvin at even par. At the end of the front nine, Clayton posted
even par-36, Gauvin one-over par 37 as Wong struggled with a three-over
39. The short cliff-hanging par-three tenth hole saw Wong and Gauvin
birdie as Clayton posted a 4 for bogey, but came back with a birdie on
the par-5, 555-yard eleventh hole to square up the back side through
eleven. Gauvin hung on for the win as his final score (72-75-147) was
three strokes better than Clayton (78-72-150) and six strokes better
than Wong at the end of the day. Gauvin said, “Scott was really coming
on strong today and I knew if I was going to win I had to concentrate
on my game and not let his low scoring affect my play.” “This is a
great tournament and it is an honor to be the Champion and I look
forward to defending my title in 2004.” Added Gauvin.
Scott Clayton took
second scoring, (78-72-150), Wong placed third (76-77-153), Kyle
Valley, Shady Canyon, Calif., fourth (80-78-158), and Bill Clayton, San
Bernardino, Calif., fifth (85-77-162) to round off the top five
finishers in the Boys 15-18 year old division. JAGS congratulates
Phillip Huffman for winning the longest drive contest on the 461-yd.,
par-4, fourth hole in the Boys 15-18 year old division.
Playing from the white
tees, 13-year old Mark Alvarez, Pomona, Calif., captured his second
first play finish in the 13-14 boys division by posting a (79-73-152)
over Alex Bon, Santa Monica, Calif. who placed second posting
79-81-160. Alvarez’ ability to stay patient with his game allowed him
to get up and down to save par in clutch situations to post a 1-over 73
for the final round of the tournament. JAGS Congratulates Alex Bon
for winning the longest drive contest on the 448-yd., par-4, fourth
hole in the Boys 13-14 year old division.
In the Girls Division the players played
from the red tees with par at 74. 14-year old Lizette Salas, Azusa,
Calif., took the girl’s 13-18 year old field by 10-shots to cruise to
her second JAGS victory. Salas said, “This course has some very, very
long holes for us girls which really test our ability and length.”
Sales played round one solid and steady with a 3-over (40) on the front
and a 1-under (36) on the back to lead the field by 4. Salas said, “I
am really proud on how I played this course especially the par-3’s. It
is always a big help to my score when I score par’s and birdie’s on the
par-3’s for the entire touranment.” Salas scored 3-under and was bogey
free during the tournament on the par-three holes. Amanda Pentecost,
Lakewood, Calif., (86-80-166) tied for second with Kristin Ingram,
Pasadena, Calif., (80-86-166). Meaghan Montoya, Riverside, Calif.,
(85-85-170) took fourth and Jacqueline Struck, Coto de Caza, Calif.,
(86-88-174) placed fifth to round off the top players in the 13-18
year-old Girl’s Division.
JAGS was honored to have Julie Kim, Kansas
State University, and Reana Yun, University of California at Irvine
participate in the Alumni Division with Yun edging out Kim by 4-strokes
for the win. JAGS congratulates Reana Yun for winning the closest to
the pin contest by only six-inches over Kathleen Fonte, Seal Beach,
Calif., on the 129-yd., par-3, tenth hole in the over-all girls
division.
