FEDORKA AND PENTECOST CROWNED
CHAMPIONS AT 2002 UPLAND HILLS JUNIOR CHALLENGE 

Upland, Calif., - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, a non-profit organization hosted the 36-hole JAGS 2002 Upland Hills Junior Challenge at Upland Hills Golf Club, Upland, Calif., on October 5-6, 2002.   

Mitchell Fedorka, Upland, Calif., won his first JAGS championship title while playing on his home course posting (76-69 –145) in the boys division.  Amanda Pentecost, Lakewood, Calif., took first in the girls division to claim her 5^th JAGS overall girls title since becoming a Gold Scholar JAGS member in February 2001.  

Players found day one of the tournament hot and dry with gusty Santa Ana winds out of the desert keeping the greens firm and quick.  Derek Zellmer, Huntington Beach, Calif., took the first round lead posting a 4-over 74 with Doug Fortner, Tustin, Calif., (75), and Eric Rasmussen, Canyon Lake, Calif., (75) hot on his heels going into day two of the tournament.  Zellmer said, “I played very solid today but left some birdie putts just outside the cup on several holes.”    “If I can stay patient tomorrow, I know I can take my score lower.”  Added Zellmer.   

Day two saw calmer winds and lower temperatures with Fedorka, Upland, Calif., shaking up the leader board posting even par 35 on the front with 2 birdies and 2 bogies.  On the back, Fedorka made bogie 5 on the 369-yd par-4 10^th hole but then settled down and carded a birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie run on holes- 12, 13, 14 and 15 for a day two total score of 1-under 69.  Fedorka said, “Other than my triple on hole 16, my game was great today especially on holes 12, 13, 14 and 15.”  “Having 3 birdies and an eagle really pumped me up on the back and I had to really stay focused to finish out the final holes not to let my game get away from me.”  Added Fedorka.   Second finisher was Corwin Cole, Covina, Calif., (77-71-148), with Derek Zellmer, Huntington Beach, Calif., (74-76-150) taking third with fourth going to Charles Acret, Orange, Calif., (76-77-153), and Eric Rasmussen, Canyon Lake, Calif., (75-78-153) respectively.     

In the Girls Division, Amanda Pentecost, Lakewood, Calif., (81-80-161) ran away with her 5^th Girls Division JAGS Title over Meaghan Montoya, Riverside, Calif. (86-92-178) and Lauren Stechman, Yuma, Ariz., (93-92-185).   Pentecost said, “This course is perfect for my game but the quick greens really challenged me to stay patient and positive.”  Pentecost added, “It is an honor to win my 5^th Girls Division JAGS title and I look forward to lower scores for more success on the JAGS Tour.”
