FRANCIS WINS FIRST JAGS TITLE BY 5 SHOTS AT THE 2002 INLAND EMPIRE JUNIOR CUP

Calimesa, Calif., - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, a non-profit organization hosted the 36-hole JAGS 2002 Inland Empire Junior Cup at PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley, Calimesa, Calif., on September 21-22, 2002.

The first tournament of 2002/03 season was held at the beautiful Southern California PGA at Oak Valley Golf Club utilizing both courses, Champions and Legends during this 36-hole event.

Jordan Francis, Yorba Linda, Calif., won the his first JAGS championship by shooting 2 over (74) on the Champions course and 4 over (76) on the Legends course to win by 5 over Ryan Kirby, Ojai, Calif., (76-79-155) and 6 over Corwin Cole, Covina, Calif., (79-77-156) and Derek Zellmer, Huntington Beach, Calif., (80-76-156).

Day one on the Champions course found temperatures over the 100-degree mark with winds gusting up to 30 mph.  These difficult conditions allowed only 4 of the 36 players to score in the 70’s.  Francis started quickly on the Champions as he posted one under on the front with 3 birdies and a bogey.  Despite increasing heat and strong wind gusts, Francis finished round one 2 over and gained a slim two stroke lead over Kirby who scored four birdies during his round.  Francis said,  “I tried to stay focused despite the conditions and played for fairways and greens.”

Day two on the Legends course brought higher temperatures with wind gust at 10 to 20 mphs.  Francis again played steady golf, avoided big numbers to complete his first JAGS tournament as Champion posting, (74-76-150).

Playing from the white tees in the Boys 13-14 division, Mitchell Fedorka, Upland, Calif., captured his first JAGS event by carding (73-71), even par 144 for the two days.  Fedorka never looked back as he began round one on the Champions course posting 1 under on the front and finished 1 over for the day at 73, with a total of 4 birdies.  Day two on the Legends course, he played consistent with excellent course management to record 4 birdies and finished 1 under at 71.  Fedorka said, “It is great to start off my JAGS season with a win in my flight.”  “I stayed away from trouble and played great tee to green.”  Added Fedorka.  Second place went to Doug Fortner, Tustin, Calif., third was captured by D J Schultz, Palos Verde Estates, Calif., and fourth by Christopher John G. Ancheta, Lancaster, Calif.

JAGS’ next event will be at Upland Hills, Upland, Calif., on October 5-6, 2002 followed by the 54 hole Crevier BMW / Mini Orange County Junior Championship at Black Gold Golf Club, Yorba Linda, Calif., on November 9-10-11.  This 54-hole Junior Championship is Golfweek / Titleist and Junior Golf Scoreboard nationally ranked.   For information on up coming JAGS events visit www.jagstour.com or call 562.493.8416.  JAGS is Southern California’s only year round junior tour with monthly 36 hole nationally ranked tournaments for juniors.
