SHAW AND SCHOLL TAME LOS SERRANOS SOUTH
TO CAPTURE 2004 PRESIDENT’S JUNIOR CUP

Chino Hills, Calif.– Matthew Shaw from Clovis, Calif., and Sommer Scholl from Riverside, Calif., tamed the long and difficult south course at Los Serranos to run away from the field and win the 36-hole 2004 JAGS President’s Junior Cup tournament.  A field of 46 boys from eight states and 13 girls from California participated in this Golfweek/Titliest and Junior Golf Scoreboard nationally ranked tournament at the historic Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, California.

On day one, Shaw had an up and down round with 5 birdies and 5 bogies to finish at even par 74, a 1-stroke lead over Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, Calif., and Ryan Perez, Honolulu, Hawaii.  Kris Assawapimonporn, Huntington Beach, Calif., was 2 back at 76 and 12 others were within 5 shots of the leader before darkness fell.  Due to darkness, not all players were able to complete round one and went out early on day two to finish.

Day two began early with 11 players back on the course to complete round one.  Shaw was wide awake as he posted a nifty 4-under 33 on the front and 1-under 36 on the back for a 5-under 69 to finished with a 7-shot victory over second place finisher Kyle Valley, Irvine, Calif., who fired a 2-under 72 for the day and finished the tournament at 2-over par (150).  Warren finished tied for 3rd at 3-over par (151) with Greg Moss, Sherman Oaks, Calif.  Michael Pena of Indio, Calif., was also under par for round two posting a 1-under 73 to finish tied for fifth with Perez at (152).  Scott Clayton, San Bernardino, Calif., Alex Bon, Santa Monica, Calif., and Nick Baratelle, Cypress, Calif., finished tied for seventh, (154). Assawapimonporn and Chris Kilmer, Bellingham, Washington were tied for tenth, (155). Shaw was really happy with his low rounds of the season and his 10 birdies in 36-holes.  Shaw said, “I really like the course and my play was very solid during this tournament.”   Shaw’s short game was right on target giving him short putts for birdies and pars throughout the day.  “This was a great tournament and I plan to be back next year to defend my title.” Added Shaw.

Because of darkness during round one, the entire Girls Division came back on day-two to finish round one early Monday morning.  Sommer Scholl finished her first round at 2-over par 76 and held a 3 shot lead over Allison Wing, Irvine, Calif., as the second round began.  Ryann O’Toole, San Clemente, Calif., was 3rd and Kristin Ingram, Pasadena, Calif., was in 4th tied with Angela Villela, Santa Clarita, Calif.  Scholl was on fire for round two as she went birdie, birdie, then added two more birdies and two bogies to finish at 2-under (72) for a two day total of even par (148).  Scholl said, “This course is long and gives me the opportunity to play aggressive golf.”  This is Scholl’s second consecutive win on the JAGS Tour this season.

Wing held on to 2nd at (159) while Ingram finished third at 160 ahead of O’Toole who placed fourth (163).  Villela was fifth (168) and Kendra Linder, Riverside, Calif., was sixth (172).   Kim Williams, Mission Viejo, Calif., Stephanie Hu, Cerritos, Calif., and Sunkyung (Keaton) Kim, Buena Park, Calif., tied for seventh at 174.  Completing the girls field was Allison Ek of Cypress, Calif.,  Kristin Medlin of Garden Grove, Calif., Tara Hale of Bell Canyon, Calif., and Simone Skinner of Coto de Caza, Calif.

Entry forms are now being accepted for JAGS next event on March 20 and 21, 2004 (Sat/Sun) at Quail Ranch Golf Club in Moreno Valley, Calif.  Applications are available at www.jagstour.com. Tournament entry deadline is March 5, 2004.  JAGS will host the Giant Golf 2004 California Orange County Championship during spring break, April 13-14, 2004 at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton, Calif.  To avoid being placed on a wait list, applications should be submitted early.
