San
Bernardino, Calif. – Wrapping up a great Martin Luther King, Jr.
holiday weekend under ideal weather conditions, Jeff Looby, Burbank,
Calif., and Summer Scholl, Riverside, Calif., were the winners in JAGS
36 hole Junior Shootout at Shandin Hills. A field of 25 boys and 14
girls participated in the first JAGS tournament of 2004.
In the first round of
the Boys division, Jeff Looby had four birdies to finish at one under
71 and take a one shot lead over Micah Burke, Los Angeles, Calif.,
three shots over Jordan Francis, Yorba Linda, Calif. Four back at 75
were Bradley Wyatt, La Verne, Calif., and Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos.
Calif. Day two began with a battle between Looby and Francis playing
in the same group and at the turn, Francis had made up five shots on
Looby and was leading the tournament. Looby settled into his game and
fired an even par 36 on the back nine to finish 3 over at 75 for a
total of 146 and win over Francis who finished at one over at 73, one
back of Looby at 147. Wyatt also fired a one over 73 to finish alone
in 3rd at 148. Gene Webster Jr., San Bernardino, Calif.,
also shot 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 4th
with Burke and Warren at 151. Scott Clayton, San Bernardino, Calif.,
was 7th and Ed Timmins, Denver, Colorado was 8th
but really liked California’s winter weather. In a 3 way tie for 9th
were Kristofer Butkys, Newbury Park, Calif., Eric Thorson, Westlake
Village, Calif., and Jason D’Amore, Manhattan Beach, Calif.
In a strong field of 14
girls, Summer Scholl, Riverside showed the field the way by posting 5
birdies and a 2-under par 70 on day one. Three back at one over 73 was
Emily Mason, Highland, Calif., followed by Lizette Salas, Azusa,
Calif., at 75. Kristin Ingram, Pasadena, Calif., was in 4th,
6 back at 76. Scholl continued her steady play in day two by shooting
an even par 72, posting two birdies and two bogies and 14 pars to
finish with a 142, 2-under for the tournament and winning by a total of
5 strokes over Mason who took second with a 147. Ryann O’Toole, San
Clemente, Calif., fired a second day 1-under 71 to take 3rd
at 150. Ingram and Salas finished tied for 4th at 153.
Krystina Gillenwater, Menifee, Calif., was 6th followed by
Angela Villela, Santa Clarita, Calif. Angela had a hole-in-one on day
one on the par 3 15th hole using an 8 iron from 115 yards.
It was her first “ace”. Nicole Smith, Riverside, Calif., Lee Lopez,
Whittier, Calif., and Sunkyung “Keaton” Kim, Buena Park, Calif.,
placed eight, ninth and tenth respectively.
JAGS next event in
February 15 and 16 at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills, CA. This
36 hole tournament will be nationally ranked by Golfweek/Titleist and
Junior Golf Scoreboard. Applications are available at
www.jagstour.com and the tournament deadline is January 30th.
JAGS will also host events at Quail Ranch, March 20/21 and the 2004
Giant Golf California Orange County Junior Championship at Coyote
Hills, April 13/14 during spring break.
