LOOBY, SCHOLL SET THE PACE AND WIN AT
SHANDIN HILLS JUNIOR SHOOTOUT

San Bernardino, Calif. – Wrapping up a great Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend under ideal weather conditions, Jeff Looby, Burbank, Calif., and Summer Scholl, Riverside, Calif., were the winners in JAGS 36 hole Junior Shootout at Shandin Hills.  A field of 25 boys and 14 girls participated in the first JAGS tournament of 2004.

In the first round of the Boys division, Jeff Looby had four birdies to finish at one under 71 and take a one shot lead over Micah Burke, Los Angeles, Calif., three shots over Jordan Francis, Yorba Linda, Calif.  Four back at 75 were Bradley Wyatt, La Verne, Calif., and Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos. Calif.  Day two began with a battle between Looby and Francis playing in the same group and at the turn, Francis had made up five shots on Looby and was leading the tournament.  Looby settled into his game and fired an even par 36 on the back nine to finish 3 over at 75 for a total of 146 and win over Francis who finished at one over at 73, one back of Looby at 147.  Wyatt also fired a one over 73 to finish alone in 3rd at 148.  Gene Webster Jr., San Bernardino, Calif., also shot 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 4th with Burke and Warren at 151.  Scott Clayton, San Bernardino, Calif., was 7th and Ed Timmins, Denver, Colorado was 8th but really liked California’s winter weather.  In a 3 way tie for 9th were Kristofer Butkys, Newbury Park, Calif., Eric Thorson, Westlake Village, Calif., and Jason D’Amore, Manhattan Beach, Calif.

In a strong field of 14 girls, Summer Scholl, Riverside showed the field the way by posting 5 birdies and a 2-under par 70 on day one.  Three back at one over 73 was Emily Mason, Highland, Calif., followed by Lizette Salas, Azusa, Calif., at 75.  Kristin Ingram, Pasadena, Calif., was in 4th, 6 back at 76.  Scholl continued her steady play in day two by shooting an even par 72, posting two birdies and two bogies and 14 pars to finish with a 142, 2-under for the tournament and winning by a total of 5 strokes over Mason who took second with a 147.  Ryann O’Toole, San Clemente, Calif., fired a second day 1-under 71 to take 3rd at 150.  Ingram and Salas finished tied for 4th at 153.  Krystina Gillenwater, Menifee, Calif., was 6th followed by Angela Villela, Santa Clarita, Calif.  Angela had a hole-in-one on day one on the par 3 15th hole using an 8 iron from 115 yards.  It was her first “ace”.  Nicole Smith, Riverside, Calif., Lee Lopez, Whittier,  Calif., and Sunkyung “Keaton” Kim, Buena Park, Calif.,  placed eight, ninth and tenth respectively.
