Moreno Valley,
Calif., - Blake Shinoda of Santa Ana, Calif., and Lee Lopez,
Whittier, Calif., took first place honors at the JAGS Moreno Valley
Junior Challenge held at the demanding Quail Ranch Golf Course in
Moreno Valley, California. Shinoda battled the 90 degree heat,
swirling winds and small tricky greens to defeat the field of 22
boys from three states and finished with a two day total of 147, 3
over par.
Day two, in the boys
division, had Shinoda tied with Jeffrey Chen of Walnut, Calif., each at
74 with a two shot lead over Chris Gilman, Yorba Linda, Calif., and
held a three shot advantage over Casey Murphy of Rathdrum, Idaho, all
playing in the final foursome of the day. Shinoda played the front
nine at even par and at the turn had a one shot advantage over Chen who
was one over at the turn. Gilman was also one over while Murphy made
the turn one under for the day. Despite a few stumbles on the back
nine, Shinoda finished strong with a birdie, par, eagle to finish the
day at 1-over 73 and won by 5 strokes over Gilman, who was 2nd and 6
over Murphy and Chen, who tied for 3rd. Fifth place went to
Bradley Wyatt, La Verne, Calif., and 6th went to Gregory Chu,
Chula Vista, Calif. Bodin Bhanaraksa, Chino, Calif., placed 7th,
Philip Chian, Covina, Calif., was 8th, Con O’Connor,
Burbank, Calif., was 9th, and Jonathan Fidone, Laguna Niguel,
Calif., placed 10th .
In the girls division,
Lopez poured in 6 birdies on day one to finish with a 2-under par 70 to
lead Chaneng Joe, Poway, Calif., who finished at even par. Shannon
Yocum, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., trailed by 4 and Emily Mason,
Highland, Calif., was 6 behind Lopez as the first round was completed.
Day two began with
these leaders in the final foursome playing under slightly cooler
conditions but a little breezier than day one. At the end of nine
holes, Lopez’s lead over Joe was still two shots, but Mason was now
only three back and had moved ahead of Yocum. Lopez continued her
steady play but only got one birdie to drop on the final nine but
managed to hold on to defeat Mason and Joe by one shot as ended the
match posting a final score of 147, 5 over par. Lizette Salas, Azusa,
Calif., moved up to 4th place with a 153, while Yocum and
Tiffany Lua, Rowland Heights, Calif., tied for 5th. Mariko
Makabe, Rancho Palos Verde, Calif., was 7th, followed by
Angela Villela, Santa Clarita, Calif., was 8th and Stephanie
Yocum, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., finished 9th. Madison
Butler, Coto de Caza, Calif., and Sunkyung (Keaton) Kim, La Palma,
Calif., tied for 10th.
In April, JAGS is proud
to present the 2004 GIANT GOLF California Orange County Junior
Championship at Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, CA on
April 13-14, 2004. This 36-hole tournament will be nationally
ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard and is an approved AJGA Performance
Based Entry event. Applications are available at
