ABRAHAM LEE AND NARA SHIN CLAIM TITLES AT SCGA

Murrieta, California - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars (JAGS) hosted the 2004 Memorial Junior Classic in Murrieta, California on May 1-2, 2004. Battling heat, wind and smoke from surrounding brush fires, Abraham Lee, La Canada, Calif., and Nara Shin, Chula Vista, Calif., captured the champion titles at the Robert Trent Jones designed SCGA Golf Course.

In the boy’s 15-18 flight, Lee posted the only sub par round after day one, and started day two with a two stroke lead over Dustin Slikker, Bakersfield, Calif., and five shots over Christopher Klabfleisch, Las Vegas, NV. Lee played steady golf and finished his round with a chip in eagle at 17 and birdie at 18 for a victory over Klabafleisch who finished second. Slikker and Adam Tebbs, Henderson, NV finished tied for third. Micah Burke, Los Angeles, Calif., shot even par on day two to finish in a tie for fifth with Michael Stewart, Jr. also from Las Vegas, NV. Kristofer Butkys, Newbury Park, Calif., placed seventh.

The boy’s 14 and under flight was won by Tyler Weworski, Carlsbad, Calif. Weworski showed off his low scoring ability on day two as he posted a low round of 68 to force a playoff with first round leader Mark Alvarez, Pomona, Calif. With both players tied at 4-over (148) after the completion of 36-holes, they went back out on the course for sudden death play-off starting on hole-one. Weworski teed it up first and continued in perfect form as he nailed his tee shot down the middle of the fairway leaving him a chip and a 5 foot putt to claim his victory posting a birdie over Alvarez who scored a par on the first play-off hole. Third place honors went to Bodin Bhanaraksa, Chino, Calif., followed by Alex Park, Mission Viejo, Calif., who finished in fourth. Ryan Miranda, Los Angeles, Calif., was fifth.

The girl’s division showcased players from San Diego to Santa Clarita, with Shin capturing her first JAGS event title with a 3-over-par total of 147. Sara Thead, Poway, Calif., and Angela Villela, Santa Clarita, Calif., tied for second. Fourth place was claimed by Keaton Kim, Buena Park, Calif. Twelve year old Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., took fifth and sixth went to Allison Wing, Irvine, Calif. Marissa Cuervo, Orange placed seventh and eighth went to Sara Thead also from Poway, Calif., who improved by 20 shots over day one. Kristin Medlin, Garden Grove, Calif., and Madison Butler, Coto de Caza, Calif., tied for ninth.
