Long Beach, Calif., – Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, Calif.,
fired a second day 3-under 69 to finish with a two-day total 142
(2-under) to win his second 2003 JAGS’ tournament this season by six
shots over Kris Assawapimonporn, Huntington Beach. Calif., (74-74-148)
and third place finisher, Nick Baratelle, Cypress, Calif.,
(76-75-151). Derek Zellmer, a JAGS’ Alumni and the 2003 Sunset League
Champion, playing as an individual was 4 over at 146.
Playing in her first JAGS event, Girls Champion, Tiffany
Lua, Rowland Heights, Calif., (74-74-148) took control early and never
lost sight of her goal to claim her first JAGS title over Tina Eng,
Monterey Park, Calif., (80-74-154) and Jennifer Bermingham, Long Beach,
Calif., (78-81-159).
The 36 hole event was
hosted by Junior Golf Amateur Scholars (JAGS) gave junior golfers from
Southern California and Nevada the opportunity to play in a nationally
ranked 36 hole tournament at El Dorado Park Golf Club in Long Beach,
California.
Warren, led the tournament after day one by posting a
1-over 73, just one shot ahead of Assawapimonporn and 2 shots ahead of
Sean Kapp, La Palma, Calif. As round two progressed, Warren picked up
a stroke on the front nine with two birdies and made the turn at
1-under par 35. He pulled away from the field on the back nine with two
birdies and an eagle on the final hole, finishing at 142, 2-under par.
"I was playing for overall consistency," Warren said. "I just tried to
play my game to the best of my ability. Making eagle (3) on the
491-yard par 5, 18th was a great way to finish the
tournament.” This is Warren’s second consecutive win on the JAGS Tour
this 2003/04 season and his fifth JAGS Championship Title overall.
In the 13-14 years old boy’s division,
Mark Alvarez, Pomona, Calif., (79-74-153) displayed total concentration
on day two as he took first to win the division. “My game on Saturday
was not very solid. I was having trouble hitting fairways and greens
and getting up and down from the tough rough.” Alvarez said, “If I
was going to win my division, I knew I had to forget about my score an
only think about hitting solid shots and staying out of the rough and
away from all of the trees.” Alex Bender, Manhattan Beach, Calif.,
took second place and Cameron Turner of Glendale, Calif., placed third.
Tiffany Lua brought her “A” game as she competed in her first JAGS
event posting (74-74-148) and was crowned Champion of the Girls
Division. Lua had a four-stroke lead over Bermingham and 6 shots over
Eng and Allison Ek, Cypress, Calif., going into the final round. At
the turn, Lua was even-par (36) 3 ahead of Bermingham but was now 5
shots ahead of Eng who carded a 1-under 35. Lua said, “Tina played
great on the front today and even though I had a five-shot overall
lead, I knew I had to continue to play fairways and greens on the back
and not get rattled if I was going to win.” “This tournament was fun,
competitive and we were all treated like professionals by the JAGS
tournament committee.” Added, Lua. Allison Ek, Cypress, Calif., took
fourth and Madison Butler, Coto de Caza, Calif., placed fifth to round
off the top five in the Girls Division.
