San Bernardino, Calif.,
– Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, Calif., held on to capture the Boy’s
Division Championship over Jordan Francis, Yorba Linda, Calif., and
Dustin Slikker, Bakersfield, Calif., at the Shandin Hills Junior
Challenge, Sept. 20-21, 2003. Lizette Sales, Azusa, Calif., captured
her fourth overall JAGS title by winning the first JAGS event of the
2003-04 season over Kristin Ingram, Pasadena, Calif., and Meaghan
Montoya, Riverside, Calif.
The 36 hole event was
hosted by Junior Golf Amateur Scholars (JAGS) gave junior golfers from
Southern California the opportunity to play in a nationally ranked 36
hole tournament at the Shandin Hills Golf Course and despite soaring
temperature over 108 degrees, all players had a great two days.
Warren, the first round
leader, began day two paired with Francis and Slikker in the final
group. Warren started off great carding birdie, birdie, par, but found
trouble on the par-4, 363 fourth hole as he tried to drive the green,
but landed in the sand instead. Warren said, “I should never have
tried to drive the green. Instead, I should have played for a spot in
the fairway about 125 yards back and relied on my short game to score
low on the hole. Warren completed the front nine 2-over (38), tied
with Francis. Warren finished the day with a total of 3 birdies in his
final round and a two-day total 72-78-150, 6-over par to claim
his fourth overall JAGS’ Boys Champion title. Warren said, “This
course has lots of up and down lies with undulating greens. I like
this course because I have to hit different shots from different lies
with different wind conditions.” Brian Cox, Yorba Linda, Calif., and
DJ Schultz, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., placed third and fourth
respectively.
Playing from the white
tees in the 13-14 years old Boy’s Division, Gene Webster, Jr., San
Bernardino, Calif., (74-73-147) playing on his home course, took first
place over Ronnald Monaco, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., (81-74-155) and
Brett Robertson, Tustin, Calif., (89-78-167). Webster said, “I really
like this course and am proud to be the winner in my division. I am
looking forward to moving up to the older flight when I turn 15 next
month.”
The
Girls Division brought another great finish with Ingram, Salas, and
Montoya in the final group to begin round two of the tournament. With
a one-stroke lead over Salas and 4 shots over Montoya, Ingram knew she
had to stay low to win. However, Salas took command of the front nine
by posting a 1-under 35, 5 shots ahead of Ingram. Salas said, “I was
hitting the ball great and my putts were dropping.” Sales sealed the
victory by firing a super 1-over 73 and finished with a two day total
of 149, 5-over on the demanding course under very hot conditions.
Sales said, “I drove the ball in the fairway long and straight today
and did not get into much trouble, except with the heat. It was really
hot out here.” This is Salas’ fourth JAGS’ Girls Champion Title and
was just recently named the JAGS 2003 Rookie of the Year with Academic
Honors. “Kristin and Meaghan both have great games and it is an honor
to play with them.” Added Salas. Ingram placed second, Montoya took
third and Stephanie Hu, Cerritos, Calif., placed fourth.
