San Bernardino,
California, Junior Amateur Golf Scholars (JAGS) conducted its annual
Shandin Hills Junior Shootout at the always demanding course in San
Bernardino. This classic course provides a challenge for JAGS
players due to its small quick and undulating greens and narrow
fairways lined with mature trees and many bunkers. Day two saw
players battling early morning cold and winds gusted to over 40 MPH
during the round making scoring conditions very difficult.
Ronnald Monaco from
Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., fired a sparkling first round
67 (5-under) and finished with a six
shot lead over Bryan Pierce of Arroyo Grande, Calif. Scott Clayton
of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mitchell McCarthy of Laguna Hills,
Calif., were also in the final group on day two. Day two proved to
be a challenge for all players as a strong cold Santa Ana wind began
early and intensified during the round. Monaco seemed unaffected by
the winds and was a total of 7-under after the front nine and
finished two over for the day scoring a 3-under par for the
tournament at 141. Monaco credited his great scoring to excellent
putting and some good breaks including a chip in birdie on the par-3
11th hole. Clayton finished 2nd at 151 and
Zack Kanny of Ventura, Calif., was 3rd at 156. Pierce
placed 4th while McCarthy, Lawrence Hsu of West Covina,
Calif., and Jonathan Fidone of Laguna Niguel, Calif., tied for 5th.
Christopher John G. Ancheta from Lancaster, Calif., finished 8th,Tom
Moore from Huntington Beach, Calif., and Russell Boring of Westlake
Village, Calif., tied for 9th.
Rachel Morris of
Carlsbad, Calif., continued her winning ways posting an even par
(72) on day one, carried a five shot lead over her nearest
competitor, Devon Brown of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Also in the
hunt were Lizette Salas of Azusa, Calif., and Lee Lopez of Whittier,
Calif. Morris was able to hold on to her first round lead and to
win her third JAGS event during this current season. Morris said
she was happy she had a big lead because the conditions were so
difficult on today. The wind was so strong and unpredictable.
Lopez finished 2nd and Salas was 3rd.
Christine Cho from LaCresenta, Calif., was 4th, Devon
Brown 5th , Angela Villela from Pacoima, Calif., was 6th
, Sunkyung Kim from Buena Park, Calif., was 7th and Toni
Leon of Los Angeles, Calif., was 8th.
JAGS February
36-hole tournament will be held at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino
Hills, February 20-21, 2005. This tournament is ranked by Golfweek
and the individual winners will be awarded performance points by the
AJGA. This is a great course and is used as a qualifying site for
many USGA/SCGA and PLGA events. Players need not be members of JAGS
to participate, although member’s tournament fees are lower.
Membership and tournament information can be found at
www.jagstour.com. March 29 and 30, 2005, JAGS will play the
newest Orange County course, Arroyo Trabuco. This course was
designed by Tom Lehman, the next Captain of the U S Ryder Cup team.
Players playing in monthly JAGS events keep their games sharp and
will be ready for spring golf. |
