ROQUE AND MORRIS CAPTURE
CHAMPIONSHIP AT SCGA

Murrieta, California, JAGS (Junior Amateur Golf Scholars) conducted its 5TH annual Memorial Junior Open tournament at the beautiful SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta, California on May 14-15, 2005.  This 36-hole event is nationally ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard featured top golfers from Northern and Southern California.

Spring finally arrived in California, with two hot sunny days allowing 50 junior players to stay loose and have fun on the classic Robert Trent Jones SCGA Golf Course.  The course was in excellent condition with undulating greens and challenging pin placements.

JAGS newcomer Andrew Roque, Monterey Park, Calif., won his first JAGS title posting a two-day total of three-under par 141 to defeat Josh Perez, Villa Park, Calif., by two shots who finished second at one-under par 143.  Tied for third at one-over 145 were Michael Drake, Riverside, Calif., and Dan Geis, El Segundo, Calif.  These four players were the final paring on day two and battled throughout the entire 18-hole round.  Geis moved into a tie for second after the front nine and Drake birdied the last hole to finish with a two-under 70.

The final hole became a critical decision point for these four golfers if they were going to have a chance to win the tournament.  All but Roque hit their tee shots right into the rough. Roque placed his shot on the right-hand side of the fairway with a perfect angle to the pin.  His second shot rolled just off the green pin high with a chance for birdie and the win.  Lining up his putt, Roque made a solid stroke to roll in his birdie and post a one-under 35 on the back nine for the victory.  Roque said, “I have been working very hard on positioning my shots and not trying to crush the ball for distance.  It is great to be long, but being long was causing me to miss fairways and kept me from scoring low during my rounds.”   He also commented he had recently started a stretching exercise program instead of lifting weights and credits his steady play to his increased flexibility. Alex Bon, Santa Monica, Calif., Ben Seelig, Culver City, Calif. and Ronnald Monaco, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., finished tied for 5th at 152.  Jason Saengow, Lakewood, Calif., placed 8th at 153 and Tom Moore, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jon Berger Mammoth, Calif., tied for 9th

Rachel Morris, Carlsbad, Calif., won her 4th JAGS Title this 2004/05 season with her steady golf for both days at the SCGA Golf Course.  Morris carded a 73-73 for a two-over par 146 to win by two shots over Jacqueline Struck, Coto de Caza, Calif., who placed second posting 75-73-148, two shots over Lee Lopez, Whittier, Calif., who took third scoring 76-74-150 placing third.  Fourth place went to Veronica Valerio, Temecula, Calif., and Summer Scholl, Riverside, Calif., finished 5th.  Kimberly Punyasavantsut, Anaheim, Calif., and Lucy McGovern, Escondido, Calif., tied for 6th.  Stephanie Yocum, Palos Verde Estates, Calif., placed 8th, Ashley Dyer, Corcoran, Calif., was 9th ,and Tori Leon, Los Angeles, Calif., finished in 10th.

JAGS next two-day tournament will be held at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, June 28 -29, 2005.  This 36-hole tournament is nationally ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard and the results are watched by National and Regional junior golf programs, and college coaches throughout the US.  This is a great course used for as a qualifying site for CIF, Collegiate and USGA/SCGA and PLGA events.  Players need not be members of JAGS to participate, although member’s tournament fees are lower.  Membership and tournament information can be found at www.jagstour.com.  July 21 and 22, 2005 the JAGS Tour returns to California Country Club in Whittier, CA and the FIRST JAGS Fund-raiser will also be played at California Country Club on Monday July 25th  , a two-person scramble format with a shotgun start at 1o’clock.  Sign up now and play in these great upcoming events.
