MORRIS CAPTURES BACK TO BACK JAGS VICTORY

Calimesa, California - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars (JAGS) hosted the Southern California Girls Junior Championship 18-hole golf tournament on October 9, 2004. A strong field of junior girls from California took on the tricky Champions course at PGA of So California under ideal warm conditions with some afternoon gusty winds.

Twelve year old, seventh grader, Rachel Morris, Carlsbad, Calif., was crowned Champion posting a 4-under par 68 to top the field of 30 junior girls with the top five finishers posting scores under par. Morris played a steady round with four birdies and 14 pars to cinch the victory. Morris was paired with Lizette Salas, Azusa, Calif., who finished 2 shots back at 2-under par 70 and Emily Mason, Highland, Calif., who tied for 4th at 1-under par 71. Parents and tournament officials following this threesome were treated to a total of 12 birdies and 2 eagles during the match. Kylie Fuller, Temecula, Calif., played an outstanding round as she fired a 3-under 69 to capture 2nd place by scoring 4 birdies and 1 eagle. Christine Song of Fullerton tied for 4th with a 1 under par 71 that included 5 birdies.

Morris credits her success to her love of the game and a strong daily practice and playing routine that give her the confidence to win. She especially enjoys the opportunity to play in monthly two-day competition with JAGS against girls that are older and more experienced. Morris said, “I had so much fun today. I really like playing with experienced players like Lizette and Emily because it helps me to focus on my own game and do my best.” Said, Morris.

Completing the top ten finishers at PGA Oak Valley was Lee Lopez, Whittier, Calif., placed 6th with a 1-over par, 73, Marina Martinez, Modesto, Calif., took 7th posting a 3-over par, 75. Heather Wilson, San Diego, Calif., took 8th with a 5-over par, 77 and Danielle Frasier, Encinitas, Calif., and Nara Kim, Diamond Bar, Calif., tied for 9th at 6-over par, 78.

JAGS next event is the Long Beach Junior Classic October 30 & 31, 2004. This 36-hole tournament will be held at the Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach. A few openings are still available. Entry forms for this and all JAGS tournaments are available at www.jagstour.com. JAGS November two day tournament will be held at San Juan Hill in San Juan Capistrano on November 13 &14. Players need not be members of JAGS to participate, although member’s tournament fees are lower.
