Riverside, California - Junior Amateur Golf Scholars
(JAGS) hosted the Riverside Junior, a 36-hole golf tournament on
September 25 and 26 with junior golfers from California to tackle the
50 year old General Old Golf Course under extremely hot and windy
conditions.
Alex Bon, Santa Monica, Calif., won the Boys
Championship and his first JAGS victory posting a two-day total of
74-72-146 (2 over par) over Ronnald Monaco, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.,
who finished second and Tom Moore, Huntington Beach, Calif., who placed
third. Bon rolled in three birdies on day two for his even par round
and said he really enjoyed the challenge the General Old course and the
winds gave him. “Most of the greens are elevated and with the strong
cross winds, I really had to play within my self and think about my
shots all day. I really had a lot of fun the past two days” said Bon.
Fourth place went to
Jordan Bertoglio, Orange, Calif., with Christopher John G. Ancheta,
Lancaster, Calif., and Lawrence Hsu, West Covina, Calif., tied for
fifth. Finishing out the top 10 were Brett Robertson, Tustin, Calif., 7th,
Jonathan Fidone, Laguna Niguel, Calif., 8th, Alex Park,
Mission Viejo, Calif., 9th and Steven Nielsen, Trabuco
Canyon, Calif., 10th.
The Girls’ Champion and
first round leader with the only sub par round of the tournament, a
great 3-under par 69, was twelve year old, Rachel Morris, Carlsbad,
Calif., who finished at even par and held off a charge from the 2004
JAGS Player of the Year, Lizette Salas, Azusa, Calif., and 2004
Co-Rookie of the Year, Lee Lopez, Whittier, Calif., who finished second
and third respectively. This was Rachel’s first JAGS victory and her
first two day tournament victory since she began playing golf as an 8
year old. Morris said, “I started getting a little nervous even though
I scored 1-under on the front nine today and making bogey, on the first
three hole on the back nine didn’t help me either, but when I made
birdie on 15 and a sank a great par putt on 16, I got my confidence
back.” Morris had a total of 7-birdies during the 36-hole
tournament. Sunkyung Kim, Buena Park, Calif., took 4th,
Emily Mason, Highland, Calif., 5th, Jordan Chafez, Rancho
Palos Verdes, Calif., was 6th. Nara Kim, Diamond Bar,
Calif., and Ashley Gilmore, Coto de Caza, Calif., tied for seventh
while sister Valerie Gilmore finished 9th and Neomi Hunt,
Chino Hills, Calif., placed 10th.
