Rancho Santa
Margarita, Calif., playing the from the tips at the ever challenging
Tijeras Creek Golf Club, Tom Moore, junior at Edison High School,
Huntington Beach, Calif., finished with even par 72 to capture his
first JAGS title by 1 stoke over Michael Drake, senior at Martin
Luther King Jr. High School, Riverside in the 2006 Southern
California Boys Junior Championship.
Moore's front nine
was solid with birdies on holes 1, 4 and the 5th, a
par-three signature hole where he sunk a 35 foot downhill birdie to
go 3-under. He finished his front nine at 2-under 34 after a bogey
on the ninth. Just one shot back, Drake started his day with an
eagle on the first hole and pars until hole-7 which has been named
the most difficult par-3 hole in Orange County where he scored a
bogey to finish with a 1-under 35.
The back nine proved
once again to be a big challenge to all the players, especially
those who had never played from the tips before. Daniel Inocencio,
freshman at South Hills High School, West Covina, Calif., carded the
lowest score on the back nine with a 1-under 35 to put him in a tie
for 5th at 76. The one stroke difference on the front
nine clinched the victory for Moore as he and Drake both carded
2-over 38 on the back nine to finish 1 and 2 respectively in the
tournament.
Third place was a
tie between Miles Cole, sophomore at Los Alamitos High School, Los
Alamitos, Calif., and Jon-Eric Cook, freshman at Paso Robles High
School, Paso Robles, Calif., each scoring 2-over 75 for the
tournament. A four-way tie for fifth at 3-over 76 were Inocencio,
Stewart Hagestad, freshman at Sage Hill High School, Newport Coast,
Calif., Norm West, senior at Los Alamitos High School, Los Alamitos,
Calif., and Kyle Morrison, junior at Redondo Union High School,
Redondo Beach, Calif.
