2008 JAGS WESTERN ALL-STARS RETAIN CUP
JAGS 15 • VCJGA 3
|
The 2008 JAGS Western All Stars traveled to Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai, California on January 12 & 13, 2008 to compete in the 2008 North South Junior Cup tournament against the Ventura Junior Golf Association All-Stars (VCJGA). This was the 3rd year of competition between the two junior associations. JAGS has won the past two events, one hosted by VCJGA and one hosted by JAGS Junior Tour.
The twelve JAGS All-Star players were captained by Miles Cole and Lee Lopez and included Mark Alvarez, Brandon Van Goethen, Arturo Saro, Joshua Granger, Daniel Inocencio, Kristen Park, Victoria Fallgren, Demi Runas, Veronica Valerio, and Katelin Dilger.
The two day competition uses two separate formats. Day one is a partner best ball with stroke scoring for all 18 holes and low score wins the match with a total of 6 points while day two is individual match play, 12 matches, with a total of 12 points. JAGS needed 9 of the 18 points to retain the cup while VCJGA needed 91/2 to take the cup.
The key to preparation for this year’s competition was an amazing pizza party attended by the JAGS players and parents. Afterwards the players played an intensely competitive pictionary game which was held at the WAS headquarters
(hotel lobby) that ended in a tie with everyone winning movie tickets thus claiming the first victory of the weekend. Thank goodness they can play golf because their drawing skills need a lot of work.
JAGS’ team captains combined their players for round one team competition as follows: Lopez & Runas (66) vs. Holden & Tubert (77), Park & Valerio (71) vs. Conway & Liu (74), Fallgren & Dilger (73) vs. Molyneux & Cornelison (86),
Alvarez & Van Goethen (72) vs. B. Holden & Doering (70), Granger & Saro (68) vs. K. Holden & Gralitzer (71), and Cole & Inocencio (67) vs. Solvis & Walker (70). At the conclusion of day one, JAGS 5 - VCJGA 1. VCJGA hosted a wonderful gathering at the club house after round one where players and parents enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner and dessert.
Meanwhile, back at JAGS headquarters, (hotel lobby), a team meeting was held to determine what order the players would play during the individual match play competition the next day. Not knowing what order VCJGA would play their players, captains Lopez and Cole worked diligently on what order their players would play in during individual match play competition. Final scoring for match play was: Cole (won) over Slovis, Granger (won) over Gralitzer, Inocencio (won) over K. Holden, B. Holden (won) over Saro, Alvarez (won) over Walker, Doering (won) over Van Goethen, Lopez (won) over Tubert, Park (won) over Liu, Runas (won) over Conway, Fallgren (won) over Holden, Valerio (won) over Molyneux, and Dilger (won) over Cornelison. Final score in match play: JAGS 10 - VCJGA 2. Final over-all scoring: JAGS 15 - VCJGA 3. Congratulations to both teams for an outstanding event.
JAGS Junior Tour would like to thank Mr. Mark Wipf, VCJGA Executive Director, his All-Star Team Players and their parents, rules official Mr. Richard Gralitzer, and Mr. Tyson York, General Manager of Soule Park Golf Course for their hospitality and outstanding play.
